Arador creates unique books about animals: in-depth science and practical advice as comic-book stories. We seek agents to represent them to retailers.

Description

Arador Publishing is the book publishing department of Arador Innovations Ltd, a research and science communication company based in Finland. Arador’s mission is to provide easy access to in-depth scientific knowledge to people involved with animals: animal owners and other enthusiasts, students, and professionals. Our specialty is developing new ways of visual communication that combine education and entertainment, delivering carefully fact-checked knowledge with substantial potential to improve the quality of life for animals and people alike.

Our first commercial product is a series of nonfiction comic books. “The Mind of a Horse. Science Meets Comics” was released in December 2023, and “The Mind of a Dog. Science Meets Comics” in October 2025. The books are created by a scientist-artist team comprising the top names in Finland in the field of animals. Dr. Helena Telkänranta has also won most of Finland’s most prestigious nonfiction book awards and is one of the country’s most renowned experts in animal behaviour. Maija Karala and Ville Sinkkonen are science illustrators in international demand.

The books are A4 paperbacks with 80 pages. They are mainly aimed at adult and teenage readers, but have also been found attractive by younger children. Each book contains in-depth knowledge of the behaviour and needs of these animals, along with practical advice on training, care, and improving the well-being of animals and their owners. Most of the information is presented as a colourful comic-book story with a plot and relatable characters. Each of the ten chapters ends with a text page with further information and with a QR code to exclusive online content. 

Language versions: The horse book has been translated into Finnish (titled Hevosen mieli. Tiedettä sarjakuvana) and Swedish (Hästens sinne. Vetenskap i serier), and in early 2026, it will be released in German (Wie Pferde ticken. Wissenschaft als Comic) and Spanish (La mente del caballo. La ciencia se une al comic). The dog book has been translated into Finnish (Koiran mieli. Tiedettä sarjakuvana), and it will be translated to the rest of the abovementioned languages in 2026. In 2026, there will also be translations of both books into French, Italian and Dutch.

The year 2027 will see the release of “The Mind of a Cat. Science Meets Comics” in all the abovementioned languages.

Sales so far: Most of our marketing efforts so far have focused on the Finnish-language horse book, as that is the most familiar market to us. The horse book has sold 4,000 copies (in a language with only 5 million speakers). Therefore, we expect it to have proportional selling potential in other languages. Dog owners are several times more numerous than horse owners,  so we expect the selling potential for the dog book to be proportionally larger.

What we expect of agents: We are looking for agents who can contact bookstores, department stores, hypermarkets, pet supply stores and/or horse supply stores in one or more of the countries where the abovementioned languages are spoken (except Finland, which we can cover ourselves): in other words, in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden; and in 2026, also in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and countries across Latin America. We can provide the agents with the promotional material needed, such as free samples of the book and pdf files of sample pages. The agent’s task would be to contact stores, offer them free copies of the books to test customer interest, inform the stores of our bulk-order discounts and other terms, and advise interested stores on how to place their orders. Together with the agents, we’ll devise a system for the stores to place their orders in a way that lets us know which agent had been in touch with the store in question, so that the agent can get their commission of the profit.
